San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. Announces 2024 Charitable Contributions to Local Community Organizations, as well as to Program Returning Horned Lizards to Their Natural Habitat
CHRISTINE, Texas [March 17, 2025] – San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECI) has announced its 2024 donations to local communities in Atascosa and McMullen Counties, contributing more than $34,000 to organizations that include the Children’s Alliance of South Texas, the Texas Ramp Project and volunteer fire departments. San Miguel employees also gave generously of their time and skills to those in need.
In addition, the Cooperative donated $5,000 to the The Center for Conservation and Research at San Antonio Zoo (CCR) to reintroduce to central Texas the horned lizard, which has been state-listed as threatened since 1967. CCR has created a “lizard factory,” a climate-controlled, bio-secure facility that houses a colony of three to five dozen breeder lizards. When the young lizards are large enough, they are released on suitable ranch land where they are surveyed and monitored.
“Through our charitable contributions and partnerships, we have supported initiatives that provide essential resources, education, healthcare and relief to countless individuals and families,” said Craig Courter, General Manager & CEO of SMECI. “We are deeply grateful to our employees and partners who share our commitment to making a difference. Their dedication and generosity have been instrumental in helping us to maximize our impact to the local community.”
In 2024, San Miguel gave donations ranging from $500 - $1,000 to the following organizations:
•Atascosa Animal Allies | •Campbellton Volunteer Fire Department |
San Miguel also participated in CoBank’s “Sharing Success Program” to provide matching funds that resulted in $20,000 in grants, including:
